[Faculti] Melting the ICE

September 22, 2022

Faculti recently published a video featuring Justin Ren, Associate Professor, discussing aspects of urban electric vehicle deployment for city managers, private developers, urban planners, and utilities.

With climate change on the rise, almost one third of greenhouse gas emission is coming from the transportation sector, giving Ren inspiration for his newest publication exploring the deployment of clean transportation infrastructure.

While not highly publicized, global electric car sales have doubled since last year. There has been a great acceleration of EV adoption in countries within Europe, in China, and now the United States. This has led to increased competition amongst drivers for charging stations, especially in areas where stations are dense, which can impact people’s decision to adopt EVs. There is also ongoing fear of range anxiety. He states, “What if I’m stranded and my car battery runs out? That is a real thing which the book talks about. We need to come up with ways to accelerate the deployment of charging infrastructure. The book looks at big cities as well as small neighborhoods to see how and what we can learn in terms of promoting not only EV adoption, but deployment of charging infrastructure.”
