[Forbes] What Business Executives Can Learn from Putin’s Many Leadership Failures

March 3, 2022

Forbes recently published insight featuring Moshe Cohen, Senior Lecturer of Management and Organizations, on his opinion of Vladimir Putin’s leadership style and what business leaders can take away from it.

The article examines the history of Putin’s leadership failures. It breaks down those failures into several different categories and provides reasoning on why business executives should avoid implementing similar tactics in their own leadership styles. In sections on “irrelevant metrics,” “vision,” and “advice for business leaders” Cohen reflects on how outdated Putin’s mindset and vision is, and the effect a business leader maintaining a vision based on the future can have on their business. His belief is that Putin’s inability to achieve a future facing focus has and will continue to lead Russia down the wrong path. Furthermore, he advises business leaders to avoid doing the same to prevent exposing their own companies to similar failures.

“[Business Leaders’] vision determines the direction of their organizations, and they must look forward not backward. Otherwise, they too risk strategic harm to their companies by engaging in tactics that worked in the past.”
