NY Times: Small Businesses Have Surged in Black Communities. Was It the Stimulus?

The United States has seen a sharp rise in new startups since the pandemic, especially in black communities. Was it the stimulus, or was it something else all together? Catherine Fazio, Lecturer in Strategy & Innovation, recently sat down with the New York Times to discuss her and her co-authors’ recent findings from their Startup Cartography Project.

“It feels significant that we saw this big response in neighborhoods where it doesn’t typically happen. When you remove those [economic support] gateways that have worked in some ways to limit access for certain communities, then you really do unleash potential.”
