Compounding pharmacies must stop making versions of Ozempic and Wegovy as shortage ends

Marketplace recently published an article featuring Rena Conti, Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing the implications of the FDA ending the national shortage of weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.

With the shortage officially over, compounding pharmacies must stop making direct copies, but access to these drugs remains limited and costly for many. Some pharmacies may look to work around the rule with minor changes.

“But there’s a loophole. Compound pharmacies can sell drugs that have a slight reformulation,” Conti adds.

Since compounded versions are often cheaper, this shift may affect affordability—but alternatives will still be available, just in different forms.
