Plummeting Ridership Means Looming Budget Shortfalls for the MBTA

Boston Business Journal recently published an article discussing the MBTA’S decreased ridership and what this means for the transportations budget moving forward, featuring Fred Foulkes, Professor of Management and Organizations.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the MBTA experienced little rebound due to safety and reliability concerns. Another major factor contributing to a decrease in MBTA use is the post-pandemic work world and the emergence of hybrid schedules that result in less commuting for office workers.

Foulkes emphasizes this point, adding that, “The hybrid office — unless we have a big recession — is here to stay.”

This shortfall has led to state representatives searching for new revenue options, as well as competitive fares to encourage people to choose the MBTA over cars.
