We’re Not Racing to the Moon, We’re Making It Home

September 8, 2023

Gizmodo recently published an article featuring Jay Zagorsky, Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, on the space industry and the increasing desire to establish a lunar economy.

With many countries, like China, competing in building the strongest lunar economy, the U.S. numbers have been falling behind with the space industry shrinking. Competing countries are continuing to increase their space budget overtime, which could lead to a lack of crucial resources.

“If you just read the headlines, you’d think, ‘wow, space is doing amazing…but as an economist, I’m like, ‘wow, space is doing terrible,’” Zagorsky says.

With more countries gaining access to the lunar surface through crew missions and robotic advances, the opportunities of space exploration continue to grow.
