KARE recently published an article featuring Jay Zagorsky, Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing his expertise on the growing demand of passports in the United States.
In Minnesota alone, the number of applicants grew by over 100,000 between 2021 and 2022 and is expected to have an even larger number after 2023. This recent traffic of applicants across the country has caused a major backup in passports. After many temporary employees were laid off during travel restrictions, government staffing shortages are also contributing to that delay.
Zagorsky points out, “The passport agency has been trying to hire those people back, but with unemployment so low around the country, it’s tough to find workers. Give yourself some extra time and be prepared for maybe a disappointment.”
From personal experience, Zagorsky recommends keeping your old and expired passport on hand, as it can be accepted so long as there is no change in address or other information. He also recommends that Americans travel to Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands if they are looking for a getaway as neither destination requires a passport.
