[MIT SMR] Will Online Degrees Threaten the Traditional MBA? What Experts Say

June 29, 2022

MIT SMR Strategy Forum recently published insight featuring Timothy Simcoe, Professor of Strategy and Innovation, discussing the value and future of the traditional MBA degree.

Business education programs, such as full-time two-year MBA programs, face increasing competition from more convenient and accessible alternatives. In an MIT Sloan Management Review Strategy Forum, panelists discussed whether online education and specialized degrees will eventually replace the traditional two-year full-time MBA. Timothy was one of the 16% of panelists to agree to some extent that specialized and online MBA programs will eventually replace the traditional MBA program. Timothy explains why a traditional MBA may not be suitable for many individuals, both in terms of career trajectory and resources, stating,

“Students who are more sensitive to price and opportunity costs, or who are looking to upskill without switching employers, will find these new formats and options appealing.”
