Scripps News recently published an article featuring Rena Conti, Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing the Trump administration’s expansion of TrumpRx, which added more than 600 generic medications to the federal discount drug platform.
While the addition of generic medications may benefit some uninsured and high-deductible patients, it does little to address the primary drivers of rising prescription drug spending, which are brand-name and specialty medications.
“Even with generics added, experts said the potential savings heavily depend on a patient’s situation. For the vast majority of Americans who have health insurance, using that coverage to pay for medications is still usually a better deal than paying cash through TrumpRx,” Conti adds.
Expanding access to generic medications may provide savings for some consumers, but broader structural reforms are needed to meaningfully reduce prescription drug costs over the long term.
