Small businesses may take the brunt of tariffs, even when they’re based in the US

May 6, 2025

Retail Dive recently published an article featuring Greg Stoller, Master Lecturer of Strategy and Innovation, discussing how Walmart has launched a new initiative called “Grow with US” to support U.S. small businesses through mentorship, training, and financial resources.

The program includes access to Walmart’s Supplier Academy, early payment support, and opportunities to showcase products through platforms like the Walmart Marketplace and the U.S. Open Call event. This effort is part of Walmart’s broader global support for small businesses and comes as many brace for the financial strain of potential new tariffs.

According to Stoller, the Walmart initiatives come at a time when small businesses are bracing for the impacts of President Donald Trump’s looming trade war. Unlike Walmart, small businesses lack the power to negotiate with suppliers, nor can they withstand wholesale and manufacturing price increases.

Walmart emphasizes small businesses’ vital role in its supply chain and aims to help them achieve long-term growth and visibility.
