Politico recently published an article featuring Florian Ederer, Allen and Kelli Questrom Professor in Markets, Public Policy & Law, on Google’s resilience in the face of antitrust challenges.
After a U.S. court rejected a breakup order in favor of lighter remedies, prompting the EU to pause its own case, Google’s stock rose and its dominance deepened. While regulators proved the company maintained a search monopoly, the judge pointed to generative AI as a potential market disruptor, easing the case for harsher action.
As Ederer noted, “This is the best outcome [for Google] given that Google lost this case.”
Google’s regulatory battles are far from over, but its latest victories give it an air of invincibility, leaving global watchdogs struggling to rein in its influence.
