Bloomberg recently published an article referencing research conducted by Mark Williams, Master Lecturer of Finance.
Boston’s unreliable transportation system is leading to outmigration from the city. The transportation system has struggled with low ridership post-pandemic, underinvestment, outdated infrastructure, and a budget shortfall. Despite efforts such as creating the transportation funding task force the ongoing outmigration persists.
“Massachusetts stands to lose almost $1 billion in annual revenue by 2030 as residents — particularly prime-age workers and high-earners — move elsewhere,” the article adds, referencing Williams’s study.
While legislators aim to make Massachusetts more competitive for businesses, improve quality of life, and create a more equitable state, these goals are unattainable with a failing transportation system.
