Marketplace recently recorded a podcast featuring David Livermore, Research Professor in Strategy and Innovation, discussing the utilization of “cultural intelligence” in fostering civil discussions around politics at work.
As the 2024 election approaches, the rise of polarizing political views highlights the importance of cultural intelligence, defined by Livermore as “the capability to relate and work effectively with people who are different than you.” This skill is increasingly valuable as political tensions escalate, enabling employees to navigate differing perspectives with neutrality and understanding.
“But increasingly, cultural intelligence also predicts how well somebody can work across ideological divides or political divides that seem to be showing up everywhere, even in the workplace,” Livermore adds.
Fostering cultural intelligence can help mitigate polarization and enhance collaboration in diverse workplaces.
