Mainebiz recently published an article featuring Jay Zagorsky, Clinical Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing Maine’s legal sports gambling market.
From November to June, Maine earned over $3.2 million in tax revenue, with $2.3 million coming in the first half of 2024. Sports betting in the state has shown promising figures, however, the impact of the ongoing Olympic Games, starting last week, remains uncertain, especially during a historically slow period for sports gambling.
“I expect the Olympics to make a big impact on the hearts and minds of millions of fans, but have little impact on the gambling industry’s bottom line,” Zagorsky adds.
While some experts believe the Olympics could boost betting activity, others doubt its impact, due to the lack of Olympic knowledge compared to major U.S. sports leagues.
