ESPN recently published an article featuring Jay Zagorsky, Clinical Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing the potential for sports betting during the 2024 Summer Olympics.
With legal sports betting booming in the US, the Olympics offers a unique opportunity for bettors. Although it is an opportunity for American bettors to diversify their portfolios with sports they don’t usually engage in, bettors tend to prefer familiar sports and athletes.
“I don’t expect the handle to be especially big primarily for one simple reason: Gamblers like to bet on things that they know. When you don’t know and you’re betting just because it’s something interesting to watch on TV, you’re not going to put large amounts of money down,” Zagorsky adds.
Despite the diverse betting opportunities, the lack of knowledge in many Olympic sports and the complex scheduling of the games may limit betting activity.
