HFMA recently published an article featuring James Rebitzer, Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing the book he co-authored with his brother, Robert Rebitzer, titled, “Why Not Better and Cheaper?: Healthcare and Innovation.”
The book analyzes the differing uptakes of health innovation, describing how it can be too easy for healthcare to adopt low-value innovations, yet too hard to adopt high-value innovations. This is because of incentives, social norms, and the way competition works or fails to foster innovation.
Health systems should become more welcoming of transformative innovations through the professional values of physicians and other providers.
