The New York Times recently published an article citing Building a Wall Around Science: The Effect of U.S.-China Tensions on International Scientific Research, a co-authored working paper by Raviv Murciano-Goroff, Assistant Professor of Strategy and Innovation.
The Trump administration’s cuts to research funding, agency layoffs, and immigration restrictions pose a serious threat to U.S. innovation and economic growth. Freezing NIH grants, firing NSF staff, and limiting foreign researchers risk weakening competitiveness in AI, biotech, and other critical fields, discouraging global talent and diminishing the nation’s scientific leadership.
Murciano-Goroff’s co-authored paper found that even before formal restrictions were enacted, Chinese students were already becoming less likely to study in the U.S. during the first Trump administration.
The findings indicate that isolationist policies harm both countries, undermining global scientific collaboration by restricting the flow of talent and knowledge.
