USA Today recently published an article featuring Lecturer of Management & Organizations, Constance Hadley, discussing the rise in productivity as companies move to a remote work environment.
It is common for employees’ calendars to be quickly filled with in-person or virtual meetings, which can exhaust workers and decrease productivity, according to organizational experts. Corporate managers have been trying to tighten agendas and shorten sessions for years. Companies are experimenting with new methods to combat meeting bloat in order to increase efficiency. Even though meetings can be essential for collaboration and innovation, time-wasting meetings are still taking a toll on productivity. Hadley explained that a big part of the problem is that meetings have increased in length and frequency over the past 50 years. Meetings have also become a major contributor to the feelings of anxiety or dread the day before heading back to work, what is often referred to as ‘Sunday Scaries,’ she stated.
“My husband and I called it Sunday nightitis, that feeling when you open up your calendar for the week and you just want to hurt yourself in a mild way so you don’t have to attend all those meetings,” she said.
