Newsweek recently published an article featuring Jay Zagorsky, Clinical Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law, discussing school absences amongst children, even in the post-pandemic world.
Although online instruction became the norm with the coronavirus outbreak, many children, particularly in high-poverty areas, are still missing several days of school. Truancy in school has led to learning gaps, along with labor and economic disruptions.
“Today, even though factory work is on the decline, absenteeism is just as important. Chronic absenteeism from school leaves people unable to participate in today’s high-technology knowledge economy,” Zagorsky adds.
If these trends continue, children won’t be adequately prepared with the necessary social, emotional, and intellectual skills to enter the workplace.
