BU Today recently published an article by Mark Williams, Master Lecturer of Finance, discussing how the 2024 Major League Baseball season stands as a critical juncture for the sport.
Ticket prices are soaring, viewership is down and many stadiums have empty seats despite attempts to boost attendance post-COVID.
To help stop the slide, the game needs to gain new energy and bold changes. Williams’ suggestions include limiting pitchers per game, altering home run scoring, or awarding runs for triple plays. Such modifications could inject excitement, influence game strategy, and bolster fan interest.
“MLB is not going to fold anytime soon, but the growth-at-all-costs approach and ignoring its audience is undermining its longer-term appeal,” Williams adds.
To secure its relevance and future success, MLB only needs to look to other major sports for a roadmap.
