The Brink recently published an article featuring Carey Morewedge, Professor in Marketing, discussing how algorithms, while often criticized for amplifying human biases, can also serve as mirrors, revealing biases that individuals may not realize they possess.
In a study led by Morewedge, it was discovered that algorithms can help individuals become more aware of their biases. The research suggests that algorithms can serve as a tool for individuals to identify and address their own biases.
“When we add up decisions within and across persons, as we do when building algorithms, it can reveal structural biases in our systems and organizations,” Morewedge adds.
Overall, algorithms have the potential to both exacerbate biases and facilitate their correction.
