The Brink recently published an article featuring Chiara Longoni, Assistant Professor of Marketing, discussing the latest AI leap and resistance to intelligent computer programs.
ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence powered chatbot, has quickly become a phenomenon. Developed by the Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the computer program reportedly hit 100 million users in January alone and has been recognized as an AI breakthrough. However, in recent studies, Longoni has studied whether people believe AI-generated news stories or trust a computer program’s medical diagnoses – and found most were skeptical of this machinery.
Chiara draws to one of her studies on the reliance on AI technologies, adding that, “Irrespective of the actual veracity of the news, people discounted news that was tagged as written by AI—they were thinking that the news was less accurate.”
There are many debates whether AI-generated news stories are credible or not, and why ChatGPT has experienced rapid growth if many consumers don’t trust these platforms.
